Barrier-free travel

Easy boarding, barrier-free access to information, travelling safely – everyone benefits from unobstructed mobility. By the end of 2023, our passengers will be able to enjoy barrier-free access to the transportation means throughout the BLS network. This also includes our boats. In this manner, BLS will meet the requirements of the Swiss Disability Discrimination Act.

Accessibility and adaptations with regard to BehiG conformity at BLS Lake Cruise

Apart from our smallest boat (motor vessel Interlaken), all vessels are wheelchair-accessible. The accessways to the outside decks and restaurants in second class are level. Aboard motor vessel Berner Oberland and motor vessel Stadt Thun, the first-class area can also be accessed by lift. All boats (with the exception of motor vessel Interlaken) feature a disabled toilet.

According to Art. 22 para. 1 BehiG, public transport vehicles must be barrier-free by 31.12.2023 – this also applies to boats. Various adaptations are therefore necessary on our boats. Inclusion Handicap was called in for a consultancy mandate by the planning office that was commissioned to coordinate the necessary renovation and conversion work. The motor vessel Brienz was to be used as an example to assess the necessary conversion measures and, if necessary, the measures decided upon could also be applied to other boats in the fleet. The aim is that in this way, within the framework of the periodic revisions, the requirements of federal law can be implemented and at the same time further requirements and needs of people with restricted mobility can be taken into account.

Hidden Disabilities Sunflower – for greater inclusion

BLS Interlaken Lake Cruise is the first company in the canton of Bern to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network. This underscores our commitment to creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, understood, and well supported.

Not all disabilities are visible at first glance. Many people live with invisible disabilities or chronic conditions and may sometimes need a little more time, patience, space, or support. Wearing the Sunflower symbol allows people to discreetly signal their needs without having to provide further explanations. At the same time, it helps our staff to respond appropriately and respectfully to each situation. Our onboard crew and our ticket office staff have been trained accordingly and are ready to offer assistance whenever needed.

Starting in March, guests with hidden disabilities can obtain a free Sunflower lanyard at the BLS Lake Cruise Travel Centre (Lachenweg 19, 3604 Thun). It can be worn to discreetly indicate additional requirements. In addition, all our boats and sales points will be marked with the symbol, allowing guests to immediately recognize that support is available.

You can find more information about the Sunflower programme at hdsunflower.com.
