Giessbach funicular
The oldest funicular railroad in Europe overcomes a difference in altitude of 93 meters over a distance of 345 meters and connects the hotel's own landing stage at Lake Giessbach with the picturesque Grand Hotel above Lake Brienz. During the approximately 4-minute train ride, you cross the forest, cross bridges and pass waterfalls.You can explore the multi-level waterfalls further up via hiking trails. The factory cable car was built in 1899 at the thundering Reichenbach Falls. The nostalgic railroad with the original 24-seater carriages travels up to the foot of the 110-metre-high waterfall. Near the top station, three viewing terraces offer breathtaking views of the waterfall and the Hasli Valley. Sherlock Holmes fans will particularly appreciate this place, as it was the scene of the legendary battle between Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty, which ended in the waterfall.The Reichenbach Falls are best visited from the beginning of May to the beginning of October, as there is little or no water in winter.
