Water birds

The Weissenau nature reserve offers an ideal habitat for numerous birds, with plenty of nesting sites and sufficient food sources. Along the way, you can watch the water birds from a wooden observation station, or take a rest on a bench with views of Lake Thun.

Weissenau castle ruins and viewing tower

The Weissenau castle ruins are the biggest and most well-preserved castle complex in the Bernese Oberland. They are located on a former island. The castle and adjacent harbour were built in the 13th century to control the trade in goods across the alpine passes. 71 steps lead up to the 14.5-metre-high viewing platform. From here, you can see the Aare, Lake Thun and, in the background, the Niesen mountains.
